Classic cross-country ski
Compared to skating skis, classic cross-country skis are relatively long and have so-called glide zones at the front and back, while the climbing zone is located in the middle. This must be regularly treated with climbing wax for optimum grip. Beginners and occasional skiers are best advised to opt for scaled skis, which have scales that act as climbing wax instead of a climbing zone.
Skatingski
The skating ski is shorter than the classic cross-country ski and also harder, with the entire running surface being coated with gliding wax. There are also other bindings for the skating style that are stiffer than for classic skis. This prevents them from twisting. The shoes are also harder and more robust to protect the ankle when skating. Finally, there are also differences in the poles compared to the classic style. You need longer poles for skating than on the track.
